Finding her reality intolerable, Mary (Bojana Novakovic) has long lived in a vivid interior world. Here, along with her audience, both imagined and real, she is joined by a Man (Tim Rogers), who plays
music and sings; serenading and provoking her, gratifying her and her public. This is the illumination of her internal world: the wildly
imaginative landscape of stories and fantasies, both amusing and tragic, that a human heart invents as it strives for life beyond itself, to be shared with many.
The show draws from the 19th century writings of Mary MacLane, a self-proclaimed genius and recluse whose voluminous rambling diaries, essays and opinion columns were her frenzied attempt to be understood.
Her use of language and her concerns are inventive, remarkably free of social constraint and startlingly contemporary.
AFI Award winner Bojana Novakovic has been heralded as “one of the best young actresses in the country” (The Age). Composer Tim Rogers is a 10-time ARIA Award winning musician, Australian pop icon and,
according to Alison Croggan, his theatre performance “is electrifying”. They are joined by director Tanya Goldberg whose Melbourne production of Debris in 2006 garnered critical acclaim and a Green Room Award nomination for Best Independent Production.
