SENSORIUM THEATRE - Extra Sensory Performance for Extra Special Kids
Sensorium Theatre is Australia’s only company creating theatre for young audiences with profound and multiple disabilities. Performing Lines WA has been working with Fremantle-based Sensorium for the past five years to produce their shows and support its path to a sustainable company.
With Producer Rachael Whitworth, we have produced two full-length immersive sensory theatre shows, The Jub Jub Tree and Oddysea. Rachael identified the potential to move Sensorium from only performing in special needs schools to performing arts venues and festivals.
Starting with a pilot season of Oddysea at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, Performing Lines WA invited the Sydney Opera House and Arts Centre Melbourne to support the show for its first national presentations. Both venues were keen. This first season was nominated for a 2016 Helpmann Award for the Best New Presentation for Children and was hailed by the Opera House as a “landmark in accessible programming”. Oddysea is soon to embark on a national tour produced by Performing Lines WA
Simultaneously, we have been working with Sensorium to develop the administrative capacity of the company. Sensorium has now appointed a board which has taken over financial and operational management of the company.
What’s next for Sensorium Theatre?
Rachael Whitworth was successful in securing Major Festivals Initiative funding for a new show Whoosh!, which is being developed with the Opera House and Arts Centre Melbourne, and is exploring international touring opportunities for their other work.
Great news this week is that Sensorium secured Impact 100 WA’s $100,000 arts grant to assist them to create a sensory storytelling project that will provide a separate sustainable income source aside from touring.
Performing Lines is committed to providing ongoing and sustainable careers for artists and companies. For more information on how you can support us, click here>>
