Our Purpose

Performing Lines produces provocative contemporary performance by Australia’s most audacious independent artists. We curate a portfolio of work that is propelled by pressing questions and new ways of seeing the world.

Our purpose is to champion risk and to ensure that the breadth and plurality of Australia’s creative potential is represented, celebrated and enjoyed.

We co-commission, produce, partner, present or invent, looking for common concerns and shared interests. We invite new possibilities and a tailor-made approach to the way audiences and artists encounter each other.

Our Vision

Our vision is informed by our belief in creative independence and freedom of expression.

We champion the unconventional, the marginal, the rebellious and the new. We aim to be the stable base and launching-pad for fearless artists to respond to a dynamic and changing world – not only to reflect who we are but to imagine who we might become.

We aim for audiences to access and experience a repertoire of work that represents a vibrant facet of our cultural character.

Our Values

We believe

  • in freedom of expression, independence of thought;
  • in inclusivity and the value of diverse experience, perspectives and practice;
  • in robust provocation and the questioning of assumptions;
  • in exploration, discovery and the importance of reaching beyond our grasp;
  • that artists need versatile options that allow for their ambitions to be realised;
  • in respectful and ethical collaboration with all partners

Our RAP

Performing Lines acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands on which we work – the Gadigal in Sydney, the Whadjuk in Perth, the Muwinina in Hobart – and pay respects to their Elders past and present.

In everything we do, we acknowledge that we live on Aboriginal land and constantly learn from the wisdom of our First Nations colleagues. Where we are and the history that precedes us informs how we work and how we move forward.

We are committed to the reconciliation process, and have set ourselves ambitious goals to meet and exceed.

Our Reconciliation Action Plan has been endorsed by Reconciliation Australia.
